A Festival Revived from History

Niigata So-Odori isn’t just a modern celebration; it has roots in a festival from 300 years ago. Back then, in a time when Niigata was called "Funae no Sato," the townspeople would dance day and night to pray for good harvests and health. This festival was later banned, but in 2002, it was revived by the Niigata Chamber of Commerce and Industry and local citizens. Today, Niigata So-Odori honors this tradition with free, joyful dancing that reflects the rich culture of the region.

Geta So-Odori: A Dance of Tradition and Fun

One of the most distinctive features of Niigata So-Odori is the Geta So-Odori, a dance where participants wear small wooden sandals called geta. Dancers move to the rhythm of barrel drums, recreating the energy of the historical Bon Odori dances. This dance, introduced in 2005, allows anyone to join in spontaneously, creating a sense of unity and shared joy among participants.

Programs and Participation

From the opening day to the grand finale, Niigata So-Odori offers numerous opportunities to experience and participate in the dances. The festival includes performances by Hanachofugetsu, a program that symbolizes the four seasons and the essence of life in Japan, and the Geta Dance Procession, where people from various regions come together in a grand dance. The finale, themed "Create," invites everyone to think about life in Niigata, celebrate together, and participate in a joint dance for earthquake recovery and world peace.

At Niigata So-Odori, visitors not only watch dance performances but also immerse themselves in the festival’s atmosphere. Food trucks offer delicious dishes from all over Japan, and there are unique experiences that can only be found here, such as renting a costume and joining the Geta So-Odori dance. The festival’s spirit of inclusion and celebration of life means that everyone, whether a dancer or a spectator, feels like part of something special.

It’s a reminder that no matter where we come from or who we are, when our hearts dance, we truly are all the same. For three days each year, Niigata becomes a place where everyone can find happiness, express themselves, and live an interesting life.
