Naoya "Monster" Inoue Beat Nonito "Legend" Donaire
After 12 grueling rounds of the World Boxing Super Series final
Naoya Inoue came out victorious over Nonito Donaire
After 12 grueling rounds of the World Boxing Super Series final held in Saitama Super Arena on November 7th, Naoya Inoue (19-0, 16 KO) beat Nonito Donaire via unanimous decision (114-113, 116-111 and 117-109) to unify the IBF and WBA bantamweight titles. Inoue also received the WBSS tournament crown and Muhammad Ali Trophy for winning the bout.
Naoya "Monster" Inoue showed the boxing fans anticipating the bout all over the world that he has the skill and stamina to go the distance to slug it out with a veteran like Nonito Donaire (40-6, 26 KO). But it wasn't a walk in the park. It started quietly in the 1st round as both fighters measure each other, but Donaire's left hook in the 2nd round caught Inoue and left a cut above his right eye. He clearly felt the danger that prompted him to raise his right hand to cover his wound into the succeeding rounds.
Inoue's right hook shook Donaire in the 5th. It was followed by several more headshots that put the "Legend" in trouble and had to backpedal until the bell sounded.
In the 9th, Inoue bloodied in his right eye and nose at this point was hurt again by a powerful right hand to the chin, followed up by some combinations that made the younger fighter clinch to his opponent several times to survive the round.
But Donaire's momentum faded and tables were turned as the "Monster" came back strong in the 10th round and executed his perfectly timed body shot in the 11th that almost ended the boxing match. It stunned Donaire and forced him to retreat until falling to his knees to recuperate.
The referee started the count for the knockdown, that he barely beat. That knockdown put Inoue ahead of the fight that caused a deafening uproar in jubilation among his fans in the arena. Inoue determined to finish the fight kept coming with body shots, but another left hook stopped him in his tracks.
The final round didn't make a difference for Donaire as he wasn't able to connect effective punches until the bell rang to signal the end of the fight. A tough battle for both fighters, as they embraced after the bell showing respect for each other.
Donaire also known as the "Filipino Flash" proved that he was a wall Inoue needed to climb. But Inoue with his strong will, ability to adjust and adapt proved himself to be the better man in the fight. Despite the significant resistance he faced, he was able to climb the wall.
Interviewed right after the fight, Inoue said, "Donaire is extremely powerful. This is the first time I've been cut. I must admit, I had double vision in the second round, and I could see two of him. My vision was blurred until the last round. I am proud of the result of the fight; it has become the greatest in my career."
A great fighter and only 26 years old, the future for Inoue is bright and exciting as he travels to the US to join Top Rank next year.
