Business is Doing Good for the Sweet Pears in the Philippines
Sales of pears produced in Tottori prefecture are exported to the Philippines by Nihon Agri Inc., a company established in 2016 and with head office in Tokyo, began at the end of September. "Nijisseiki Pear" is the variety of pears sold directly to the well off in high-end supermarkets in the Philippines. The company has been selling apples from Aomori prefecture since 2019 at supermarkets in the Philippines. In addition to its own farm, it exports and sells Japanese apples procured from contract farmers and local markets under its own brand called "Essence" to other countries such as Thailand and Indonesia. At present, in addition to apples, due to the growing economy of the Philippines and the expected increase of Filipinos who can afford to buy imported fruits, the company has started selling pears.
Sweet and fresh Japanese pears
Currently, apples and pears with phytosanitary conditions are the only fruits that can be exported from Japan to the Philippines. According to Nihon Agri Inc., the 20th century pears in Tottori prefecture are characterized by their freshness and sweetness compared to pears from China and South Korea. Two weeks after the start of sales, 300 cases of about 3,000 kilograms were sold out. About 70% of the sales were sold directly to wealthy buyers, and about 20% were sold online at the company’s fruit-specialized e-commerce site. According to Mr. Daigo Tatara, overseas country manager of the sales department of the company, "The number of people who love Japanese fruits is steadily increasing, and I thought that pears could be sold since last year. However, the selling price of a pear in the supermarket is 180 pesos (about 396 yen, 1 peso = about 2.2 yen), which is higher than last year's apple supermarket selling price of 125 pesos. Therefore, it is not sold in supermarkets like apples, but directly to wealthy people and on e-commerce sites specializing in fruits."

Mr. Tatara also said, "Due to the influence of the new coronavirus, the purchase of foods with long expiration dates and daily necessities is prioritized in high-end supermarkets, and the market conditions of high-priced products including apples and pears from Japan are unpredictable, we will expand sales on e-commerce sites used by people who refrain from going out."
