The school year and business year start during this season, in the month of April. In spring, some move to a new place to live and others to work. There is no doubt that the spring season brings new meetings, activities, and a new start for most people.
Spring is also known as the Hanami season, cherry blossoms viewing.
As spring approaches, Japanese people look forward to the blooming of cherry blossoms. Hearts are lifted when cherry blossoms bloom and feel the end of winter and the coming of spring. Sakura (さくら) as it is called in Japanese, burst into a light pink color in various places from south to north of Japan. They bloom in parks, along the roads, mountains, and riversides. “Hanami” (花見) is a Japanese culture that literally means cherry blossom viewing. This is when people go on a picnic in parks or other places where there are cherry blossoms and enjoy the beautiful scenery with their family, friends, or colleagues.

Spring is the season in which plants and vegetables begin to grow, that’s why in Japan, spring is also the season of “Sansai” (山菜), meaning wild vegetables. They grow in mountains and fields. These vegetables have a natural bitterness and pungency when eaten that stimulate the body to be more active after having been idle during the winter. Japanese people have been eating wild vegetables for a long time to lead a healthy life, and there is no wonder why they live longer.
Spring is full of excitement in Japan with a lot of beautiful things to appreciate and delicious “spring” food to enjoy.
